Week 1 - Selecting your Fabric
This weeks task is all about selecting and choosing the fabric you would like to make your Quilt from. Post a pic to Instagram, using the above hash tags of your fabric pull or quilt planning to show us what you will be making your End Game Quilt from and to be in the running for this weeks prizes. (NOTE - do not post full colouring pages PLEASE!)

This is where the sky is the limit - whether you choose Solids or Prints this quilt works. You can grab fabrics from your stash or use a collection.

While I have made my original End Game Quilt from Tula Solids (fabric colours used are listed in the pattern) I also have made one from Forage by Anna Graham and Mini's using Tula Pink's Zuma collection as well as fabrics in my Carolyn Friedlander stash.

If you are looking for inspiration for fabrics then head to the #endgamequilt hash tag. There you will see lots of different fabrics that have been used so far to make End Game Quilts.

Solids
Solids work so well for this Quilt and the choices of different Fabric Company Solids is huge. I have included in the pattern the names of the Tula Pink Solids I used but you can pick any colour scheme you like for this. One way to do this is head over to Pinterest and search Colour Palettes - this gives you lots of boards with a selection of colours already that co-ordinate and work well together. From here you can pick and choose solids for any colour palette you like.

Prints
For this quilt - multi directional prints work best and are easiest - You can use small scale prints that really give the cohesive look to how many triangles read as one large triangle. Or large scale prints like big florals are also fabulous as these really stand out due to the size of the Triangles.

Directional Prints - you can certainly use directional prints - HOWEVER be aware that as you cut the Triangles along your width of fabric (WOF) that one will be right side up and the other upside down as you cut along the fabric due to the triangle shape. So if you are wanting to match directional fabrics then you will need to allow for extra fabric when you purchase.

Colouring In Page
Included in the pattern is a Colouring Page - simply print out or copy this page from your pattern and grab your colouring in pencils. This is designed to help you plan out and play with the colours and fabrics until you have a colour palette you are happy with.

Other tools that may be helpful in planning out your colour palette might be colour cards of swatch samples.

Week 2 - Cutting your Fabrics

Now that you have chosen your fabrics, this week is all about cutting into them. So let's have a chat about anything you need to take into consideration before chopping them up.

1 ENSURE your Pattern Template is printed out at the Correct size - if you are using the pattern Template page provided in the Pattern - you MUST make sure this is printed at 100% on your Printer. There is a 1in Test Square - measure it and make sure it is 1in - if it is not you need to check the settings on your Printer. Do NOT print out at "Fit to Page" or "Scale to fit" - it must be printed out at 100% to make sure your Triangle measures 8.5in or 3in. If you are using my Template Set - this does not apply to you and if you are using a Top Trimmed or other Equilateral Triangle it is a good idea to lay this onto top to check the sizing.

2 I highly suggest you cut a few test Triangles first from some scrap fabric to ensure you have the correct sizing for you Equilateral Triangles. As mentioned in the pattern - not all Equilateral Triangles have the same measurement markings on the. Some are "Top Trimmed" some are not. So unless you are using my Template set - PLEASE make and sew a few test Triangles first with the correct seam allowance to ensure you have the correct sizing before you cut into your yardage. It is better to make sure the width of the Triangles is correct before cutting them all.

3 Directional Fabrics - as mentioned in Week 1, directional fabric are not accounted for in the fabric requirements. So if you are choosing a directional fabric you may need to consider sourcing more fabric to account for this if you want your fabric to run directionally. I have worked with several directional prints before with an End Game Quilt and just not placed them directionally. So you can certainly still use them - either directionally or mixed in.

When I was having this pattern tested by some makers, this amazing End Game Quilt Mini was made by Laura Piland at Slice of Pi Quilts. Well, to say I was blown away by this was an understatement.

Laura has put together some more details of how she went about working on this Mini with Fussy Cutting as a way to create amazing detail in the pattern.

End Game Quilt Sew Along - Week 3

 end-game-quilt-w3.jpg

It's Week 3 of the End Game Quilt Sew Along and I know how excited everyone is to have cut out your fabrics and are now ready to get started on sewing together all your Triangles. This week we are aiming to sew together the first 3 rows of your End Game Quilt.

So if you have never sewn triangles before or even just want a refresher here are some of my best tips to succeed at getting nice pointy points when you are sewing your triangles and rows together.

Pins Matter
When it comes to pinning - yes I really do believe that the type of Pins you use matter and can make a big difference to your sewing. I have taught many students over the years and a simple way to make a big difference in how you pin, is to use good quality, fine pins designed for Patchwork. Big, bulky, thick pins will make things harder to line up - they disturb the fabric more when pinned through your fabrics and sometimes they can snag your fabric if they are rusted or have burs along them.

Fine Pins for Patchwork are a worthwhile notion to have in your Quilting Toolbox - I like to use Clover Fine Patchwork Pins (as pictured below and this isn't a sponsored add - just my personal opinion). They are sharp, nice and fine and are perfect for use when quilting.

pins562385.jpg

Pin Placement Tip

When it comes to pinning your rows together - one of the best tips I can give you is shown in the Steps below. It's all about lining up, checking and then the placement of your pins.

step-1.jpg

Step 1 - Once your rows are sewn together (as per the pattern instructions), to line up the points as perfectly as possible - match the rows right sides together. Then slightly open up along the raw edges of where your sewn seam line will run and match the Points here at 1/4in. Don't just assume you have everything magically perfect to sew along the 1/4in raw edge seam line. Take the time to match each triangle tip.

step-2.jpg

Step 2 - Place a pin on an angle at the 1/4in mark where you will sew your seam.

step-3.jpg

Step 3 - Pin all the triangle points, matching carefully and then pinning along the row. Sew the seam ENSURING to take out your pins just before you get to them. This is where if you have nice Fine pins the aligned fabrics are not disturbed by shifting bulky pins.
(NEVER sew over Pins!)

step-4.jpg

Step 4 - Stand back and admire your perfect alignment of your Triangle points.

End Game Quilt Sew Along - Week 5

 eg-w5.jpg

I can't believe we are getting so close to the end of the End Game Quilt Sew Along. I have been so inspired by all the different and personal stories behind your choices for which fabrics you went with and how so many of these Quilts have an owner eagerly awaiting its finish.

While Equilateral Triangles can be quite tricky when you first start, I hope that after the tips I have given you and a bit of practice you are well and truly feeling more confidant and seeing improvement and satisfaction at your points lining up.

One of the things that I have seen lots of comment about on your posts is, just how quick this Quilt sews together - and that it seemed like this was much quicker than you expected to sew all the rows together. I am really excited to hear this and I know some of you are already even working on your second End Game Quilt.

This week we are working on finishing up your last few rows - that is Rows 7-9 as well as sewing all the rows together (if you haven't done so already). Our aim by the end of this week is to have a completed Quilt Top.

QUILTING DECISIONS

When it comes to deciding on how to Quilt your Quilt - you have lots of options.

1 - Quilt It Yourself - for those keen to quilt your own Quilt there are lots of ways you can tackle this. I have Quilted all of the End Game Mini Quilts I have made. They don't have extravagant quilting on them - just simple lines following the diagonal of the triangles, using the seam line and my 1/4in foot on my machine as my guide.

eg-3-text.jpg

 img-7064.jpg

If you are quilting the Full Size End Game Quilt you will need to fill in your quilt with a lot more Quilting because of the size of the Triangles. You can do this in lots of different ways - Straight Line Quilting, Cross-Hatching over the entire quilt, using a Large Zig Zag stitch without needing a lot of experience.

For those wanting to give Free-Motion Quilting a go or already are familiar with this Technique, check out this Blog Post I wrote all about Machine Quilting. I hope this gives you some helpful tips.

Machine Quilting and Free Motion Quilting Tips

2. Hand Quilting - no this isn't a crazy idea at all. I love Hand Quilting and am even working on Hand Quilting a version I am making as a gift for an upcoming Baby arrival for a friend. I love the texture that Hand Quilting creates - it is so snuggly and soft and gives such an amazing texture to the quilt. If you are keen to Hand Quilt your End Game Quilt then check out this Blog Post I wrote all about my favourite Hand Quilting Tips and Tools to use.

3. Send it to a Professional - there are lots of reasons to use a Long Arm Quilting service. Find a Quilting service you are happy with and chat to them about your needs for this Quilt. Always remember that when you send your Quilt to be Long Arm Quilted - your batting and backing fabric need to be at least 4in bigger on all sides than your Quilt top.

I had Carol Brady of the Quilting Cottage Custom Quilt my Original Tula Pink Solids End Game Quilt. Custom Quilting is different to Edge to Edge Quilting so chat to your Quilter about what your budget is and what you want the quilting to look like.

Here are some Pics of different Quilting that The Quilting Cottage has done on some different versions of End Game Quilts I have made.

BINDING YOUR QUILT

Once you have your Quilt all Quilted - now you can turn your attention to Binding your Quilt. There are so many Tutorials for how to bind you Quilt if you Google.

I have put together a Tutorial on how to work the Binding continuously around the corner when you sew it onto the top of your Quilt - its a small but very helpful and useful way to sew your Binding all on in one go. Check it out here
